Chamundi Hill Temple, Mysore

Chamundi Hill is very famous for Chamundeswari temple dedicated to Goddess Chamundeswari, an incarnation of Goddess Parvathi who took this form to destroy Mahishasura. This is one of the major pilgrimage sites in Karnataka and one of the top places to visit in Mysore. The temple on Chamundi Hill was built in 11th century. The temple possesses 15 feet high and 24 feet long Nandi on the 800th step on the hill.

It usually takes 30 minutes to 1 hour for Darshan and can go up to 2-3 hours on special occasions. Special darshans are
available for Rs. 30 and Rs. 100 to complete the darshan quickly. Public transport is available from Mysore many parts of Mysore and taxis can also be hired from Bangalore. There is a viewpoint on the way to the hill which offers a panoramic view of the Mysore town.

Timings: 7:30 AM – 2 PM, 3.30 – 6 PM & 7:30 – 9 PM

Mysore Palace, Mysore

Mysore Palace was the official residence of the former royal family of Mysore, and also housed the durbar. It is one of the largest palaces in India and one of the best tourist places to visit in Mysore. Mysore Palace is the venue for famous Mysore Dasara and it is often used to promote Mysore Tourism. It is one of the top attractions you must include in Mysore Packages

Also known as the Amba Vilas Palace, it is a treasure house of exquisite carvings and works of art from all over the world. The
entrance to the Mysore Palace is through the Gombe Thotti or the Doll’s Pavillion that has a vast collection of dolls that belong to
the early 19th and 20th centuries. The Kalyana Mantapa or Marriage Hall with its chandeliers and stained Belgian glass ceiling arranged in peacock designs is another main attraction. The magnificent jewel-studded golden throne, made of 200 kgs of pure gold, is displayed during the Dussehra festival. The beautiful paintings on the ceiling of the durbar hall are breathtaking and provide unique feature to the palace

Timings: 10 AM – 5:30 PM on all days. The palace is illuminated on Sundays, national holidays from 7 – 8 PM and during Dussehra festival from 7 – 9 PM

Railway Museum, Mysore

Railway Museum is situated adjacent to the railway station on Krishnaraja Sagar Road. This Museum was established in 1979 by Indian Railways and it was the earliest railway museums set up in India. A visit to Railway Museum is one of the top things to do in Mysore.

The museum houses a great collection of different models of trains ran by India Railways throughout the history.
This collection consists of engines running on narrow gauge, meter gauge and broad gauge tracks, inspection coaches, engines from
different periods, a cart running with steam, etc.

There is also a private train with two coaches used by Maharaja of Mysore exhibited in Sri Ranga Pavilion which has a Maharani’s saloon carriage dating back to 1899. The Pavilion also houses several artifacts used during the initial days like different models of telephones, furniture, etc

A mini train operated by battery takes the visitors out for a joy ride on the museum grounds. Railway museum is a wonderful place
to visit, especially for kids to learn about Railway History and science behind the railways

St. Philomena’s Cathedral, Mysore

St. Philomena’s Church is a Catholic Church built in honor of St. Philomena in the Diocese of Mysore, India. This is one of the top places to visit in Mysore. Designed by the Reverend Rene Feuge, it was constructed in 1956 in a Neo Gothic style and its architecture was inspired by the Cologne Cathedral in Germany. The Saint Philomena’s Church in Mysore is one of the oldest churches in India. When the capital of Mysore state was moved from Srirangapatnam to Mysore city in 1799, many British officers and soldiers came and settled down in Mysore.

The twin spires of the church are 175 feet in height and they resemble the spires of the Cologne Cathedral and also the spires of
the St. Patrick’s Church in New York. The main hall can seat up to 800 people and contains stained glass windows depicting scenes from the birth of Christ, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection and the Ascension of Christ. It is considered to be Asia’s
second largest church.

Brindavan Gardens, Mysore

Brindavan Gardens is a famous & beautiful garden laid out below the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam. The construction work of the garden was started in the year 1927 and completed in 1932. This is one of the best tourist places to visit in Mysore. Spread over an area of 150 acres, the Brindavan Gardens is considered as one of the best gardens in India. The garden is enriched with fountains, terraces, parterres, running and cascading water channels, lush green lawns & flower beds.

The Musical and dancing fountain, located in the North Brindavan Garden, is the main attraction of the garden. The best time to
visit the gardens is after sunset when all the bright colourful fountains come alive. The garden also has a wonderful palace in
southern park which is now converted to a 4-star luxery hotel called Royal Orchid. Boating is available between southern and
northern parks.
